Varied Carpet Beetle

You need to know…

 

  1. This is a 3 mm–long beetle that can be a serious household pest.
  2. It feeds on natural fibers and can damage carpets, furniture and clothing.
  3. Adult beetles usually lay their eggs in air ducts, in closets, under furniture, or under baseboards. Once hatched and until they pupate into adults, the larvae hide in dark, undisturbed areas and feed on organic material. The larvae are thus responsible for the damage of various items, such as furniture, clothing, blankets, furs, and carpets. Collections of specimens, especially of insects, are also vulnerable to attack
  4. Signs of an infestation include the presence of damaged articles, molted larval skins in dark areas, and an abundance of adult beetles near windows.

Leather Beetle

You need to know…

 

  1. Adult hide or Leather beetles and larvae prefer to feed on raw skins and hides.
  2. Females may each lay up to 800 eggs. The life cycle is completed in 60 to 70 days. These larvae have a habit of boring into wood and other hard materials to pupate. Sometimes structural timbers may be damaged.
  3. As it is often difficult to locate the source of infestation due to the migration habits of these insects, spot treat only to crack and crevice sites where they are suspected of hiding.
  4. Larvae often appear scattered throughout a building far from the original food source. They may be in a wall void or attic where dead insects (flies) or rodents provide a food source.

  1. The Fur beetle or carpet beetle  is an important pest, damaging stored products such as furs, skins , textiles and grain.
  2. It is is a 4 mm-6-long oval shaped insect with two patches of white hair on the elytra.
  3. A common inhabitant of birds nests. Adults feed outdoors often on Spiraea plants.
